Power generation companies to provide transmission links


New Delhi:(Page3 News Network)-India Electricity 2013- International Exhibitions and Conference started at Pragati Maidan today. It is the seventh event of the series since the year 2006. The 3 days event scheduled from JANUARY 16-18, 2013 will provide immense opportunities for discussion of issues in the generation, transmission, distribution and rural electrification of growing India power sector. The event has been actively supported by central power sector utilities, IPPs, equipment suppliers, technology providers, power traders, research and consulting organizations among others, representing Indian and international power sectors, In addition, many states have participated in the event as partner States.
 Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Coal, Shri Sriprakash Jaiswal said acquisition of coal mines overseas should be done in an aggressive manner to meet the energy requirements. Efforts by his ministry have resulted in the acquisition of coal mines in Mozambique by Coal India, while private firms have been acquiring mines in countries such as Australia, South Africa and Indonesia. In an effort to reduce the widening demand supply gap of coal in the country, CIL is scouting for coal mines overseas, the minister said. He further said that to bring increase trenchancy in Coal Block allocation, the provisions of MMDR Act have been amended and new sets of rules have been framed for allotting new blocks through competitive biddings. Recently, 14 blocks for Power and 3 blocks for mining have been put on offer under government dispensation route. Few more blocks for offer to private sector are in the pipeline, the minister said. 
Power Secretary,Shri P. Uma Shankar told reporters that the Government is working on regulations to enable power generation companies to provide transmission links with a view to easing the pressure on central transmission utility. “We need to look at regulations to see that transmission is done properly. We need to ensure that the power generating stations need to ask for medium and long-term open access, that is why transmission planning is required,. At present, Power Grid Corporation caters to the transmission needs of the entire country. He said since transmission has to be directional; connecting the grid is not enough and there is a need to ensure that generating stations look into grid connectivity. States must carry out reforms as envisaged in the re-structuring package in order to avail the benefits, he said. Member planning commission, B.K.Chaturvedi also spoke on the occasion.
