National Workshop on Civil Registration

A National Workshop of Chief Registrars of Births and Deaths was held New Delhi today. The workshop, which was organized by the Office of Registrar General & Census Commissioner, India (ORGI), Ministry of Home Affairs, was addressed by Shri Anil Goswami, Union Home Secretary. In his address, the Home Secretary called upon all stake holders to achieve the National vision of universal civil registration by 2020. The workshop was attended by the Chief Registrars of Births and Deaths from all States / Union Territories as well as Principal Secretaries / Secretaries overseeing the work of registration of births and deaths, representatives from concerned Central Ministries besides representatives of UNICEF, UNFPA and Officials from Directorates of Census Operations (DCO) in the States / Union Territories and of the Registrar General, India (ORGI). 

The National Workshop reviewed the current status of registration of births and deaths across the States and discussed ways and means required to improve the current level of registration from 83.5% for births and 67.5% for deaths to cent percent level by 2020. A Web based Application on uniform Civil Registration that would cover registration of births and deaths and generation of tables along with a SMS based application for monitoring the reporting of events by medical institutions were also demonstrated. 

The deliberations of the Workshop would help to strengthen the system of Civil Registration in the country for achieving the target of universal registration of births and deaths by 2020.
